Background:
Following the conflict with ISIS, regions including Mosul, Telkif, Hamdania, and Bashiqa confront significant threats from unexploded ordinances (UXOs) and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). To tackle this hazard, Global Clearance Solutions was contracted to remove these explosives and bring back safety and stability.
Achievements:
In two and a half years, the project successfully cleared a vast number of cultural sites like a British graveyard in Mosul, agricultural lands and Al Shifa Hospital neutralizing a multitude of UXOs and IEDs. The diligent efforts of the team have facilitated the safe return of residents to their farmlands and the preservation of vital cultural sites and a very big hospital in Mosul.
The cleared localities encompass:
1- Agricultural fields and farms in Telkif and Bashiqa
2- Hospital and historical sites in Hamdania and and Mosul.
Behind the scenes efforts:
The local populace in these areas have been entrusted with significant roles within the clearance operation. Scores of individuals skilled in detecting and disarming explosive implements were employed. Adhering to strict safety protocols and rigorous training, the team surveyed the area, identified UXO and IED locations and removed these cautiously.
The pivotal role of Wissam Allamy:
Wissam Allamy, the Iraq manager for Global Clearance Solutions AG, played a crucial role. His responsibilities included not just team supervision but also coordinating with UNMAS and DMA. Allamy ensured that the team members felt respected and cared for, and his efforts to foster positive relations with regional communities greatly helped the clearance process.
Visitors reception:
A host of high-profile visitors, including ambassadors from Canada, Denmark, Korea, Finland, Germany, Sweden and representatives from UNMAS, New York, and the Minister of Environment from Iraq, visited the site demonstrating international support and commitment to the project.
Operational challenges:
The mission faced enormous challenges due to the ongoing skirmishes between the Iraqi Army and ISIS. Such unsafe circumstances necessitated even stricter safety precautions and uninterrupted vigilance. Despite these difficulties, over 4 million square meters were cleared, showcasing the team's unwavering commitment and courage.
Results:
This courageous mission has seen the return of security and allowed residents to reclaim their agricultural lands. Mosul and the surrounding regions, through the meticulous efforts of Wissam Allamy and his team, have stood as symbols of resilience and successful rebuilding post-conflict.
